Student Frequently Asked Questions
How do I register for an online class? How do I add/drop an online class?
The Online Learning Office cannot register you for classes or add/drop classes for you. You should register for an online class in the same way that you register for a traditional class. Please refer to our Getting Started link for more information about how to apply to Hocking/register for classes. If you need to add or drop an online class, you also do this in the same way you would do it for a traditional class. The course number (first three numbers) of an online class will be the same as the course number for the traditional class, but the section number (last three numbers) will start with a 5 (for example: 500, 506, or 511).
How much does an online class cost?
There is a fee of $35 per credit hour in addition to the regular tuition and course fees for an online class at Hocking College. Please see our Tuition & Fees page for tuition information. If you need financial aid information, please see our Financial Aid page.
I am registered for an online class. How do I access my class and get started on it?
Here is a link to the instructions for accessing your online class.
I have my WebCT ID and password, but they don't work.
If you are new to WebCT, you will not be entered into the WebCT system until shortly before the quarter in which you are taking your first online class begins. For all students no matter whether you are a new online student and no matter what point during the quarter you register, it will take 24 hours from the time you register for a class until the time you are entered into the WebCT system.
I have no trouble logging in, but I don't see my class listed that I registered for.
Even though you have registered for a course, your course will not be available to you until the first day of the quarter. In the morning of the first day of the quarter, the title of the class you registered for will appear on your My WebCT page, and you can click on the title of that class and enter it.
How do I know what books/materials I will need for my online course? Will the course have a discussion board or real-time meetings?
This information is available in the Course Outline for your particular course. It can be found at the Online Courses Offered link to the left. Click on the title of the course you want to know more about. This will open up the course outline for that course in PDF format. The course outline can also be found in the WebCT course itself which will be available to you on the first day of the quarter. If the title of your course is not clickable, that means that the Online Learning Office does not have access to that course outline. You will need to contact the instructor of that course for specific questions. Here is a link to a Hocking College directory: http://www.hocking.edu/cns/directory.php. You can search for your instructor's last name and find his or her e-mail address and phone number at this link.
I can log in, and I can enter my class by clicking on the title, but I can't access the course materials/take exams/find the course work.
First, make sure you've taken the Online Course Agreement. Every online course should have one of these, and usually, the ability to access the online course materials is contingent on completion of this agreement. Be sure to click on "View Results" after you finish the course agreement. If you've already taken the course agreement and you don't see a grade at your My Grades link, please contact your instructor so that he or she can push that quiz on through the grading process. You might also try viewing your online course agreement again by going to the quiz page and clicking on the "View Scores" button under the Online Course Agreement heading. This may help the quiz get processed.
Why do I have to take this Online Course Agreement?
Every online student is required to fill out the Online Course Agreement before they begin an online course. This is like a contract between you and your instructor that says that you, the student, understand that an online course will require time management skills, self discipline, and at least as much time investment as an on-campus traditional course. There are likely to be deadlines for assignments and quizzes, and a student who is self-motivated and realistic about budgeting personal time will be more likely to succeed in an online course. Successful completion of the online course agreement demonstrates that the student understands the requirements of online learning and of the course itself.
I am having trouble with my Hocking College e-mail.
The only e-mail that the Online Learning Office can help you with is the e-mail inside of WebCT. If you are having trouble with your Hocking College e-mail, please contact the Help Desk at 740-753-6563 or helpdesk@hocking.edu.
